Objective

Rediscover light: Improve diagnostics, explore the world of molecules and decipher nature with light.

One of the most important goals of biophotonics is to help understand the causes of diseases such as cancer and diabetes, develop more efficient therapeutic methods, cure people with them, or prevent the diseases from developing in the first place.

In 2018, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded in part for research on "optical tweezers." As a biophotonics tool, it makes it possible to study the mechanisms of life, including DNA, proteins, molecular motors and the inner workings of cells.

Other optical methods are also becoming an increasingly important part of medical diagnostics, the pharmaceutical industry, all forms of analytics, and even biotechnology. In this context, medicine and chemistry are working closely together with physics. With the biophotonics specialization in physical engineering, you will become part of this small group of experts in three years.

Career prospects

The new discoveries cause an immense need of technical development.

As an expert in biophotonics, you help meet the demand after your studies at the Hochschule Mittweida. You will work on transferring the research findings into substantive applications that help humans and nature.

  • In optical device development and biophotonical measurement technology, you will establish a basis with biophotonical sensors to help the human and veterinary medicine as well as the environmental and food analytics to make use of biophotonics.
  • You will do research for medical diagnostics and the pharmaceutical industry to develop sensors which can detect a heart failure without taking a blood sample.
  • In analytics, you will work on devices that analyse and hinder negative impacts on the environment. Examples would be the detection of microplastics and microbes in running water or the monitoring of bacteria in operating rooms.

The bachelor’s degree offers you a permanent position as well as the opportunity to become self-employed or to continue with a subsequent master programme in Mittweida.

Structure

The discoveries of biophotonics trigger an immense demand for technical developments.

You will satisfy this demand after your studies at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. As an expert Biophotonics in Physical Engineering, you will work to translate research findings into real-world applications that concretely help people and nature.

  • In optical device development and biophotonic measurement technology, you create the basis with biophotonic sensors so that human and veterinary medicine and environmental and food analysis can use biophotonics.
  • For medical diagnostics and the pharmaceutical industry, you will research and develop devices such as smartphone sensors that detect heart failure directly in patients instead of having to take blood samples.
  • In analytics, you work on devices that analyze and prevent harmful effects on the environment. This includes, for example, the detection of microplastics and microbes in running water or the monitoring of the type and number of bacteria in the air of operating rooms.

In addition to a permanent position, the bachelor's degree opens up the possibility of becoming self-employed - or perfecting your knowledge in the Mittweida master's program.
