Objective

Resource guzzling industry? Far from it! The change has long since begun.

Industry in Germany has changed in recent decades. Instead of smoking chimneys, high-tech dominates mechanical engineering. But the transformation is far from over. Ever-increasing energy and raw material prices, new climate protection measures, and requirements for better environmental protection will determine developments in the coming decades.

Saving resources in production is not only good for nature. It is immensely important in many areas of industry to save costs and thus offer products at an acceptable price. This is exactly what you learn during your studies at Mittweida University. Not only theoretically, but with a strong connection to industrial practice - for example in our university's own training factory.

Career prospects

More efficiency in production doesn’t only ensure a company's success.

You can almost choose where you work. In Germany alone, over 6,500 companies are vying for the next generation of engineers, and there is a shortage of qualified young talent. Are you drawn to faraway places? America, Asia, Africa? Engineers trained in Germany have an excellent reputation.

With the study of resource-efficient production technology as a specialisation in mechanical engineering, you have a broad field to dedicate yourself to. Industry is looking for a new generation of engineers who can use their specialised knowledge to optimise production processes and reconcile high quality standards with greater resource efficiency.

As a production manager, you can work in production and coordinate forming processes, for example. But you can also devote yourself to production planning and quality management. In this way, you and the production managers ensure that quality and the use of resources really do fit together.

Your Bachelor's degree is enough to get you started in your career. With the right Master's degree, your prospects in mechanical engineering will be even better. Of course, you can stay at Mittweida University and delve even deeper into resource efficiency and production technology, gears, couplings and drive shafts. Even a doctorate is possible here at the HSMW in the so-called cooperative procedure.

Structure

Practical experience instead of just cramming theory. Optimal concentration on your studies.

That is our promise. Mittweida is not a metropolis like Berlin, Munich, or Hamburg. This is an advantage for you. If you want to study successfully and concentrate on your career, you should think seriously about the HSMW. The rents here are so low that only a few students need to have a job on the side. This leaves you more time for your studies and you can still party in the student club or at flat-share parties.

In addition, you are not a number like at a university with thousands of newly entering students per year. At HSMW you study in small groups. Our professors, who have experience in industry, can respond to you better, you can ask questions more easily, and at the same time you have more time in the internship to get hands-on with the machines and equipment. This is the core of the degree programme in Mittweida: "As much theory as necessary, as much practice as possible.” This motto has accompanied engineering education in Mittweida for 150 years.

At the beginning of your mechanical engineering studies, you will acquire the solid technical and scientific knowledge that all engineers need and consolidate this knowledge in the long term through practical exercises in laboratory tests and seminars. In the fourth semester, you will specialise in the area that interests you the most. In addition to resource-efficient manufacturing technology, these are digital product development, laser and surface technology, and micromobility.
