Well defined characteristics and data are required to analyze a structure. By means of these data you can mathematical describe the structure and its properties afterward. The following three analysis methods are used:
- area method
- line method
- point method
On the basis of the mentioned methods you can calculate the characteristics as shown below:
- specific volume: VV = AA = LL = PP
- specific surface: SV = (4/p)LA = 2PL
- specific integral of mean curvature: MV = 2pNA

AA relative area portion of the specified phase
LL length of the line within the phase
PP part of points of a measuring graticule
LA specific line length of the boundary
PL intersection of a straight line
MV density of the first curvature integral
NA mean number of cross-sectional profiles per unit area
