To calculate the processes that take place during laser material processing with ultrashort laser pulses, it is necessary to extend Fourier's heat conduction equation to the two-temperature model (TTM). The chosen model results in a separate consideration of the electron and phonon systems and their coupling via a coupling term in the differential equations. The necessary theoretical principles are explained and the parameters used are characterized. Various simulation results are presented for the precious metals gold and platinum and compared with experimental results. Both metals differ in terms of their thermophysical properties and their coupling behavior, which results in different processing results as well as different ablation thresholds or processing diameters.
