Use physical knowledge in a practical manner to evolve the technology of the future.

In addition to physical-technical basics and knowledge in engineering, you will acquire comprehensive skills in one out of three specialisations:

  • Laser Technology uses the power of focused and reinforced light in all its facets. This universal tool of the 21st century is used in automobile manufacture, medical technology and information transfer for example.
  • 3D Printing includes all procedures of additive manufacturing. Assisted by computers, it is possible to create highly individual products automatedly by using different methods and different materials.
  • Biophotonics uses light to investigate biological samples with optical methods. Furthermore, it deals with holding, moving and cutting cells and cell components with optical tweezers.

Career prospects

Laser technology, 3D printing and biophotonics are technologies of the future and they have one thing in common: They need skilled and highly specialised personnel. 

With this course of study, you become one of these specialists. Lasers are used industrially in many fields, such as automobile manufacture, medical technology, measurement technology, environmental technology and communication technology.

Due to the excellent reputation of the Laserinstitut Hochschule Mittweida, graduates will find job security. Furthermore, laser technology is required and indispensable for a resource-friendly production. 3D printing allows to individually tailor machines and products. Biophotonics forwards the medical sector in cancer diagnostics and treatment.  

Depending on your own interests, you can find a job in many sectors, especially in industrial fields. These include manufacturing, distribution and customer service as well as research and development in intramural and extramural research institutes.

While learning the physical and engineering basics in the first semesters, you get an insight into the special topics awaiting you. At the end of the second semester you will need those insights to make a decision:

Which specialisation do you choose? Whether Laser Technology, 3D Printing or Biophotonics – learning in small groups is essential to become a specialist in these future technologies. 

Education will mainly take place in your seminar group. Our university stands for personal support which facilitates an uncomplicated contact with your professors. You will execute your integrated practical trainings in a group of two or three to optimally develop your practical competences.

By learning the basics and the subsequent special knowledge within the six semesters, you will be able to develop, operate, apply and overhaul physical-technical devices, production processes, measurement methods and specific technologies according to your specialisation.

Lasers are the universal tool of the 21st century. The high power density and concentration of the laser radiation allows a precise handling of the workpiece with ideal welds for the industrial production – used in the automobile industry and for implants and instruments in medical technologies. The aerospace sector uses laser-irradiated surfaces, which are stain-resistant and cannot freeze. Via laser spectroscopy, mixtures of substances can be characterised in chemical analysis. Even the data transfer of the future could be laser-based and therefore fundamental for faster Internet.

Specialisation: 3D Printing

Instead of putting hundreds of pieces together, it is possible to create functional assemblies in one piece via 3D print. Cooling channels are directly integrated and optionally malleable – more suitable materials, like difficultly weldable alloys are used in this process. By using 3D print it is possible to produce custom-made products – every customer can get a unicum. Small batches can be manufactured more cheaply.

Specialisation: Biophotonics

Contributing to understanding the causes of cancer and diabetes, developing efficient therapies that can cure people and prevent them from having diseases – those are fundamental goals in biophotonics. It allows us to examine the mechanisms of life – DNA, proteins, molecular motors and the inner workings of cells. Those methods become more and more important for the pharmaceutical industry, medical diagnostics, analytics and biotechnology.

Laserinstitut Hochschule Mittweida (LHM)

The Laserinstitut Hochschule Mittweida is a central facility at the Hochschule Mittweida. Material processing is the main aspect of research. It provides an extensive overview of different technologies and methods that allow structural modifications by using laser light. Here, you can gain experience in handling laser devices.
