Discover a new world of light: Improve diagnostics, explore molecules and use light for decoding nature.
Contributing to understanding the causes of cancer and diabetes, developing efficient therapies that can cure people and prevent them from having diseases – those are fundamental goals in biophotonics.
In 2018, the Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to the research on optical tweezers among others. This tool allows to understand the mechanisms of life, such as the DNA, proteins and the inner workings of cells.
Other optical methods become more and more important for medical diagnostics, the pharmaceutical industry, analytics and biotechnology as well. Therefore, medicine, chemistry and physics have to work together closely. If you specialise in Biophotonics during your studies, you will become a member of a small group of experts within three years.
The new discoveries cause an immense need of technical development.
As an expert in biophotonics, you help meet the demand after your studies at the Hochschule Mittweida. You will work on transferring the research findings into substantive applications that help humans and nature.
- In optical device development and biophotonical measurement technology, you will establish a basis with biophotonical sensors to help the human and veterinary medicine as well as the environmental and food analytics to make use of biophotonics.
- You will do research for medical diagnostics and the pharmaceutical industry to develop sensors which can detect a heart failure without taking a blood sample.
- In analytics, you will work on devices that analyse and hinder negative impacts on the environment. Examples would be the proof of microplastics and microbes in running water or the monitoring of bacteria in operating rooms.
The bachelor’s degree offers you a permanent position as well as the opportunity to become self-employed or to continue with a subsequent master programme in Mittweida.
Physics meets biology and light meets matter.
Your study is based on the connection between applied physics and industrial practice. Within the first year, you will learn the physical-technical basics as well as the fundamentals of engineering. At the same time, that year is an orientation phase to determine whether the specialisation Biophotonics is the right one for you or if you would rather specialise in 3D Printing or Laser Technology.
As from the third semester, you will use your broad knowledge basis to acquire special knowledge in biophotonics and biophysics. You will learn about the interaction between light and biological matter in detail. Technologies like the super resolution and the high-throughput spectroscopy are an important part of your studies and crucial for your career.
You will benefit from small seminar groups – your integrated practical trainings will mainly take place in a group of two or three to make sure that you get personal support. Do not hesitate to ask advice from the tutors.
